Earlier this month I was invited to attend an afternoon of wine and cheese at the Brisbane Hotel. Wine. And cheese. No second thought needed. I used to live on Beaufort Street many moons ago, I’ve always loved that little Mt Lawley strip and love going back.
My lovely friend Myra joined me as my +1. I knew Myra would love the indulgence as much as me as she is quite the wine and cheese fan (who isn’t?). Up until this night, I had been all about Australian wines, but Myra mentioned that she currently enjoys Italian wine particularly the Fiano Greco variety. And as the universe would have it, we rolled up to the table and wine curator Paul Maley kindly filled our glasses with? You guessed it, a delightful Italian drop.
After a glass of Howard Park ‘Jete’ Sparkling Rose and a glass of Marq ‘Wild Ferment’ Chardonnay, next came the Italian goods. Myra was right, A. Mano Fiano Greco is superb. I didn’t move onto the red because when something gets my attention like the Fiano did, I get fixated and want more. I’m greedy like that. The A. Mano Fiano Greco has exotic fruit flavours and ends with a refreshing finish. Delightful indeed.
Paired with the wine was a fabulous selection of cheeses, lavosh, quince paste and this mind blowing prune and walnut log courtesy of Simon Johnson, Purveyor of Quality Foods. Seriously, have you ever tried walnut log with blue cheese? Oh. My. Cheese. We were presented with Saint Agur paired with the prune and walnut log. Again, greed and taste fixation had me elbowing folks out the way for more. We also sampled Fromager d’Affinois (smooth and silky) and Cabot Clothbound Cheddar (oh boy I do love a good cheddar), needless to say Myra and I hovered around that cheese table like kids at a Mr Whippy van. I was planning on a trip to Simon Johnson’s Subiaco store before I hit publish on this post but it didn’t happen. But when I do I can assure you my basket will be loaded up with all of the above. Hello Friday night on the couch armed with cheese.
Oh and if you too would like to try the Italian delight that is A. Mano Fiano Greco, Paul tells me they serve it at the bar at the Brisbane. Head down and redefine Sundays.
Disclaimer: I was invited by David Gardiner PR to attend Food & Friends. I’m so lucky!
